Beddgelert translates as "Gelert's Grave" and Gelert was in fact, a dog. So the story goes, Prince Llywelyn one day went hunting. He realised something was wrong, his faithful hound Gelert was not with them. He hurried home to be greeted by Gelert, wagging his tail and covered in blood. Seeing blood too on the overturned cot of his baby boy, Llywelyn ran Gelert through. The dog's final cry was answered by the sound of a baby. Llywelyn found his heir, same and well, next to the slain body of a giant wolf. Gelert had in fact, saved the boy. It is said that Llywelyn never again smiled, and built a stone cairn to mark Gelert's Grave.
